Lux Helsinki takes place annually at the beginning of January. It is a five-day long light festival held in the centre of Helsinki. The festival showcases a wide rande of light art along a new route each year. The route is a few kilometres long and the light installations of the event are displayed non-stop between 5pm to 10pm. The most famous buildings, such as Helsinki Cathedral, are highlighted along with lesser known courtyards and facades. The event presents specially commissioned new works and popular installations for international light festivals. The curators of the festival are artistic directors Ilkka Paloniemi and Matti Jykylä.

Over half a million visitors each year witness Lux Helsinki as familiar buildings and spaces transform into unique works of urban art. The power and beauty of light attracts people to come and admire this winter phenomenon during the darkest time of the year – even defying the coldest nights. Throughout the festival, Helsinki is illuminated with various light-themed art pieces. Lux Helsinki Eat also sells eatables for its visitors during the entire event.

Lux Helsinki is enabled and organised by the City of Helsinki. The festival has been awarded with Helsinki Travel by Helsinki Tourism Foundation in 2017. This award is given to parties or an event that has a positive impact on the tourism industry, its reputation and customer satisfaction.

Oh, and did I mention, Lux Helsinki is free of charge to people of all ages! The event is also accessible for people with reduced mobility. Gear up your kids with sound cancelling headsets, though – the decibels can get up quite high at times!
