Esplanade or “Espa” as the locals call it, is one of the main promenades in downtown Helsinki. It is an urban park that runs from Erottaja Square to Market Square. Designed by the architect Carl Ludwig Engel, the park was originally opened in 1818.

Espa is a short walk-through park and promenade that begins with a popular restaurant known as Teatteri. If you get a seat in their terrace, you will enjoy the view of the Espa promenade. Bear in mind, though, that Teatteri welcomes only ages 18 and above. However, the Espa park is open for everyone.

This time of the year, as Christmas is right around the corner, Espa is filled up with lights illuminating the promenade. You will see trees and reindeer figures covered with light ornaments and you might even get a glimpse of lit up Santa – the original Santa, of course.

For a brief sit down or a proper meal, you will find a famous restaurant called Kappeli, chapel in English, which dates back to 1867. It is located right in the centre of the park. Kappeli is breathtaking for it is grandiose and romantic, especially when the celebratory lights are turned on – come winter or summer. Kappeli posts photos on their Instagram and they are fantastic! Tag us @ourhelsinki2018 on your favourite Kappeli photo!

As you carry on with your stroll, you will find the Market Square on one end of the park. It is situated right by the sea, and it is an outdoor market that offers eatables and a variety of handmade accessories. It is also a convenient place to find souvenirs. A walk through the Espa park is a beautiful and wondrous way to spend an evening.

Can you tell that there is Christmas spirit in the air? 🎄✨🎄✨

Wishing you all a lovely day! Rauhaisaa joulun odotusta.
